This past weekend we celebrated Avery’s 3rd birthday with a “Frozen” themed party. Now, I know for many of you “Frozen” is old news. But, for my 3-year-old, who just saw the movie for the first time early this year, it’s all she can talk (and sing) about. Since then, she’s only talked about a “Frozen” birthday party.
Of course, my number one priority, and the inspiration for the rest of the party, became the cake. I pretty much knew from the get-go that I wanted to do an ombre style buttercream with white chocolate “ice” on top. I took Avery to Bakers C&C in Salt Lake with me and let her pick out the teal beads and sanding sugars, which seemed to really get her excited about the cake. For a week after that she would ask me, “mom, is that my cake?” every time I was working on one. I was so excited to finally show Avery her cake when I was done. And her reaction did not disappoint! “Wow, mom! (with a gasp) Is that my cake? It’s beautiful!”
I completed her cake about a week before her party because I had a work trip during the week leading up to the big day and didn’t want to leave it to the last minute. I often have to do cakes ahead of time and always freeze them in an airtight container to lock in the freshness. The morning of an event, I just remove the cake from the freezer and let it thaw to room temperature before serving.
Frozen-Themed Birthday Party Ideas
With the cake done, I came home from work Friday afternoon and sprinted to get the decorations and treats. (Thank you, Target for being the perfect one-stop party shop and making this mom’s life much easier!)
The only other baked good I made were these Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies by Joy the Baker – a recipe totally worth trying. They were a huge hit!
When Avery’s guests first arrived, one of their activities was to build a snowman out of marshmallows. I had a few on display as well. The kids had fun building the snowmen, but not as much as they enjoyed eating them! They literally couldn’t hold a marshmallow in their hand and not pop it in their mouth.

And while the cake may have been the centerpiece of the party for me, the visit from “the real” Elsa was without a doubt the highlight for Avery. She was smitten!
Elsa told stories to the kids, sang songs with them, danced with them and then had a coronation for each one of them. She was a hit and worth every penny!

Overall, I think everyone enjoyed Avery’s Frozen birthday party! And I loved seeing the magic in her eyes throughout the entire thing. Wonder which princess it will be next year!

Yes.
Do you freeze all your cakes if need be? Or can you not freeze some of them due to what filling they contain?
I freeze any of them!

You could do whatever you like but my classic vanilla cake and buttercream are going to be the easiest to tint if you wanted to do that!
