The Best Way to Cut a Cake for a Party
It’s party season! And you know what else it is? Baking season! This is definitely one of my favorite times of the year with all the gatherings, holidays, and CAKE. So, once you bake this beautiful cake and it’s time to serve it, how confident do you feel about cutting it? Sometimes cutting a layered cake can be a little tricky. Plus, if you’re cutting it for friends and family, you want to make sure each slice looks amazing–and that there’s enough for everyone! So, here is the best way to cut a cake for a party.
There’s not really a wrong way to cut a cake when you’re just at home and serving cake to your family. However, if it’s for a party there are a few tips you can learn to help navigate how to cut enough slices and make each one look nice and neat. Once you learn these tricks you will be cutting cake for a party like a pro!
Cake-Cutting Tip #1: Use a serrated knife.
Using a serrated knife, like a bread knife, is the best type of knife for cutting a cake. It will easily cut through all of the layers and fillings without making too much of a mess between each slice. You could even soak your knife in warm water for a few minutes right before slicing your cake. This will ensure it cuts right through your buttercream and cake with a smooth motion. Just make sure to dry your knife before slicing your cake.
Also, if you want to keep your layers nice and clean you can wipe your knife off in between each cake cutting. This will keep your knife from spreading leftover buttercream and crumbs to the next slice. This is the trick people follow when they have nice and beautiful slices of cake every time!
Cake-Cutting Tip #2: Remove extra toppings if necessary.
There’s nothing wrong with adding big and beautiful toppings to your cake to create the masterpiece you’re envisioning. However, it can be tricky to cut your cake for a party if those enormous toppings get in the way of cutting party-size slices. I’m specifically thinking of fresh citrus fruits that may be on top or other larger toppings that disrupt your cake-cutting.
Feel free to remove any toppings just before you start to cut the cake, so you can get nice and even cake slices without your toppings getting in the way. Just make sure everyone gets a nice look at your cake before you start disassembling it! 😉 Cake is an amazing thing to look at and eat, right?!
Cake-Cutting Tip #3: Cut 1-inch by 2-inch pieces.
Generally, party-size pieces of cake are cut 1 inch by 2 inches. This means the slice will not look like the traditional triangular shape, but more like a long and skinny rectangle. This is still a generous size of cake, and planning it this way makes it so you know how many servings to prepare for your party.
